Insomnia

I worry about the dog.
If I die in my sleep, he'll starve,
locked in his crate.
Then I'll go to hell for sure,
haunted forever
by trusting brown eyes
asking, "How could you?"

I'll unlatch the crate door.
He can shove it open,
get to water at least.
Should I put dog food out
when I go to bed?
How long would it take
before someone noticed
my absence?

They wouldn't miss me,
but they might miss what I do-
Surely someone would call,
annoyed that it isn't getting done,
and maybe later they'd check.

At least my will is current,
bills paid, no loose ends.
My life would disappear
like a smooth stone in a pond-
a few ripples, then nothing.

If someone fed him,
even the dog wouldn't mind.
