Crows

First week of September, and
my favorite birds, the ones that
sizzle under a Southern sun like
glossy black cats, hunch over
the bowls, pleased with their
lunchtime treat. Now they toss
a few pieces of cat food down
the shadowed corridors of their
throats. Now they flap their
lustrous wings, seeding the
kitten’s water bowl with dust.
Now they screech a crow song
to magnolias and wisteria vines,
voicing words the color of mid-
night after each joyous bite.
