Caroline Du Pree Le Guin
lives on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, and juggles a semi-rural
lifestyle—five acres, two horses, dogs, cats, tomatoes, blackberries, etc.— with
her writing and her first love, teaching English at a community college.
The Look
The way she tilts her face,
that girl with her sleek
ponytail and her fine
strong cheekbones–all
artfully unconscious of
creating a moment of grace.
It must make his heart
stop right in the middle of
talking about the logo on his t-
shirt or baseball or how Mr. Flannigan
gave him a D
on his chemistry test or
whatever those two are discussing
under the turning elm trees as
she looks at him that way.
Was I ever that purely
young? Never, surely that
graceful. Though there was
one afternoon I was a
high school girl too and
faced each passerby on the blank
city streets, caught
their eye and smiled.
Just to see if the world
was big enough for me.
