Deb Baker is a writer, educator and activist. Her poems and essays are forthcoming or have appeared in journals in the U.S. and Europe including, Ruah, Envoi, bottle rockets, Thirsty Magazine and Sojourners. Words Spoken on a Tornado Ravaged Porch “God has blessed me, He continues to bless me, and He is blessing me right now,” she declares, smiling in a way that engulfs us both. “He is blessing you, too.” I hand over the sack I prepared in a friend’s kitchen – peanut butter and jelly on honey whole wheat, an apple, a packet of oatmeal creme cakes, a bottle of water. We hug. She is bony, but her arms are strong. To rejoin my family, waiting in the street with canvas totes full of lunches, I must step over broken glass, twisted pieces of metal, tree branches, power lines, hunks of wood, bits of insulation. She stands very straight in a faded housecoat, rust colored wrap on her head, feet bare in worn canvas slip-ons. As I pick my way out, she continues her benediction, one hand raised, palm cupped, words flowing after me like wind. With her other hand, she clutches the paper bag. |
