Last Call

His hands on the glass of golden malt
tightened then tapped,
spreading luminous beads of sweat
tightened, then tapped
the thought of her with another man
his nose inhaling the perfume of hops
his fingers slipping down to the throat
of the pilsner’s neck, the foam rising
and bursting against closed eyes
the golden elixir burning
a cold path to his chest
a dim light flickering in a tunnel
the bartender’s voice like faint music
asking if he wants another.
