Nancy Tupper Ling (Walpole, MA) is a poet/librarian/domestic engineer...not necessarily in that order. She is the 2005 Grand Prize winner for the Writer’s Digest annual competition. Other publication credits include: Potomac Review, Radix, Mid-American Poetry Review and Flyway.

The Garden

When he enlisted
she took out the globe
traced her fingers
across the green
of a country
smooth and flat
through the Tigris.
Her thumb found
the mounds of desert.
All she knew was here,
and that old story she'd read:
how the garden of Eden
remained in this place;
how angels guarded
its east corner, kept
a flaming sword turning,
kept the fallen ones out.
