Elephant In The Room

Suppose you wake up one morning
to find a baby elephant in your bedroom,
its tiny trunk glued to the wall,
its wide eyes staring into the mirror.

At first you try to ignore it.
You leave the room, close the door,
pretend it isn't alive, isn't real.
Surely this is not your responsibility.

You don't tell friends or family, praying it
will go away, disappear like a bad dream
or indigestion. The experts you consult
confirm this uninvited thing

filling up your room. "Yup," they say.
"Happens all the time. Basically,"
they say, "you got two choices.
We can clear that critter outta there

---course we have to shoot it first---
or you can let it grow till it walks out
on its own. Could take eight or nine months.
Then maybe the zoo'll take it. Your choice"
