Mulled

You hold
cinnamon sticks,
cloves, and allspice.
One lemon and two oranges
lay on the counter, sliced.
The room smells of Christmas.
I take the pan,
silver and clean,
and pour the cider in.

In between kisses
we add the rest
and let it steam.

The aroma wraps itself
around us like morning hands,
like seeking feet,
like happiness.

The first taste is always the sweetest,
and in our eagerness
we burn our tongues
and never feel the pain.
