The Wildcat
my mother was a movie star
she drove movie star cars
she said a woman’s car is her independence
and if a woman’s not independent
she’s nothing
but my mother was something
woman before her time
fast woman
single mom in ‘63
girdle and heels
I slipped from her womb
into her Buick Wildcat
and we were in flight
with the top down
and the wind in our curls
she and her love child
when she married Him
he sold the Wildcat
and pulled the plug wires
on the rusted family wagon
oh, what had he done
to his fast girl?
mad fists pounded the dust
out of the rocking chair arms
all those beer bottles
smashed against the kitchen walls
when she got free
and back to herself
at age 50 you never saw
such a woman
Dolly Parton
hair
Jane Russell breasts
Elizabeth Taylor
jewels
legs and hose and heels
announcing her sexy ladyship
as she stepped from the open door
of a midnight blue Ford Probe
they couldn’t touch her
they didn’t even try
and when diabetes rotted her legs
and gum disease browned her smile
and the doctors came
with pills and scalpels
and machines to clean her blood
four times a week
without end
she knew what to do
she bought a slinky black Mercury
and pulled into oncoming traffic
whenever she pleased
“I’m 67 and they can damned well
wait for me!”
she had her nails done
in rose and drove
that wicked car
all the way to her funeral
which just proves
you can't a fast girl bound
