Murray McCartan‘s previous work has appeared in Main Channel Voices, Poetry Motel, Studio One, Offerings and Beginnings. After husband, father and special education teacher responsibilities are completed, he fits poetry into the margins of his day and dreams of weather warm enough to play golf.

Presentation at the Aquarium

In the octopus tank
jars are placed
with lids fastened
to challenge the beast
to teach herself
how to open them.
Her handler's motive:
Blot out any escape route,
sprawling minds
must be occupied
they should never climb
over glass panes,
they must remain
contained
like the child
my arms embrace
in my lap
whom I whisper to
learned threats,
Honey you need to sit still
to get your wish.
