On Their Horns

Maybe that is where
they were meant to meet
this morning, the man
whose log truck struck
a woman's oncoming car;
he was too sick to stop or swerve,
his own heart already in
peril, the news reported.
Maybe it doesn't matter
now, as they are swept
from the damp pavement
where two roads intersect
neither needing nor wanting
another to keep them warm,
while others, hampered, who
are anxious for work or home
are honking like a lost
flock of snow-startled
geese on their horns.
